My grandfather just died a week and one day ago. We were very close, living in the same town and seeing each other very often. Although he was battling cancer and had taken a turn for the worst, I was not prepared to let go. The most ironic thing happened after he passed away in my class the next day. The class is human development in the social setting and since it was the last class, we discussed the last stage of development, death. I sat squirming in my chair for two hours and fifteen minutes while we discussed.
It is fascinating how we are so afraid to speak about death. It is such a taboo in our society to talk about it so we avoid it at all costs. The class actually gave me piece of mind about my grandfather. Some people want to do anything they can to live a little longer, even if it means living longer in unbearable pain. He was not happy or comfortable, and it was time for him to stop suffering.
Death is a part of life and something all must accept at one point. It is so hard to lose somebody you love, but it is selfish to want them to stay when they may not want to be here anymore. When I first came home and saw my family, it was hard to not stop crying. Now I know that he is happy and not suffering. There are many questions we face after a loved one has died, but I think that we should focus on the memories they have left behind with us.

Magazine blog
A magazine that I enjoy reading is Sports Illustrated. Being in a sorority, I know that most college-age girls enjoy magazines such as Cosmopolitan, People, or something along those lines. However, I love to play and watch sports, which is why I love this magazine so much. Sports Illustrated generally targets men, who are usually the sport enthusiasts. If you care the smallest bit about sports and what goes on in addition to game time, Sports Illustrated is for you. The magazine especially attracts men when they come out with their special swimsuit edition, which I cannot say that I care for.
Sports Illustrated has many sides to it; it’s not just a magazine that discusses who should win the NBA playoffs or who is the best quarterback in the NFL. It contains interviews with athletes, interesting and peculiar facts about sports, and even gossip and rumors about famous athletes.
The focus of Sports Illustrated is to inform and entertain any avid sports fan. Sports Illustrated goes so far into detail that you can learn about almost any fact you’ve ever wondered about almost any sport imaginable. The tone can be sarcastic or just straight-forward facts depending on the article. There can also be a humorous tone and style. There are many variations in the articles in the magazine, so it has a little something for everyone.

GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER ADDS SOME DECORATION TO THE CAPITOL BUILDING IN SACRAMENTO WITH A GIANT BRONZE BEAR STATUE OUTSIDE OF HIS OFFICE.
THE GOVERNOR PURCHASED THE STATUE WHILE ON A TRIP TO ASPEN AND USED HIS OWN PERSONAL MONEY FOR THE PURCHASE AND SHIPMENT BACK TO SACRAMENTO.
THE GRIZZLY BEAR IS THE MASCOT ON CALIFORNIA'S STATE FLAG AND IS A GREAT PROP FOR CHILDREN TO HAVE THEIR PICTURE TAKEN WITH.
THE GOVERNOR'S SPOKESPERSON, AARON MCLEAR, ALSO POINTED OUT THAT THE STATUE IS FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM THE DOOR TO ALLOW HANDICAP ACCESS INTO THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE.

Copy Edit the World part 2
1. From my sorority's Spring 2009 Newsletter:
"My goal is to keep you, the alumni's, current on what we are up to."
Should say:
"My goal is to keep you, the alumnae, current on what we are up to." Seeing as we are all females, the plural version should be alumnae.
2. Also from the newsletter:
"With lasting only two weeks, this semester's recruitment was incredible."
Should say:
"Lasting only two weeks, this semester's recruitment was incredible."
The sentence doesn't need the word "with". It confuses the reader and is unnecessary.
3. From my Sociology 155 class syllabus:
"Students are expected to read the assigned readings before each class and come to class prepare to discuss these readings."
Should say:
"Students are expected to read the assigned readings before each class and come to class prepared to discuss these readings."
My professor simply forget to make prepare past tense.
4. From my Social Work 120 syllabus:
"Students are not permitted to use old tests, quizzes when preparing for exams, nor may they consult with students who have already taken the exam."

TULSA FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED JUST IN TIME FOR CAKE AT MABEL MCCULLOUGH'S 95th BIRTHDAY PARTY. ALTHOUGH THEY COULDN'T STAY TO EAT SOME CARROT CAKE, THEY HAD TIME TO TAKE A PICTURE WITH THE BIRTHDAY GIRL.
AFTER ALL 95 CANDLES HAD BEEN LIT, THE CAKE LOOKED JUST LIKE A TORCH, SAID ONE OF THE GUESTS. MABEL BLEW OUT THE CANDLES AND THE SMOKE ALARM WAS SET OFF, CAUSING 24 FIREFIGHTERS TO ARRIVE AT THE SCENE, FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH. IN ADDITION TO THE FIREFIGHTERS, 5 ENGINES AND TWO LADDER COMPANIES JOINED THE FESTIVITIES. FIRE CHIEF LONNIE LAMB STATED, "IN MY 23 YEARS ON THE JOB, I'VE SEEN A LOT OF THINGS SET OFF A FIRE ALARM, BUT I DON'T THINK I'VE EVER HEARD OF ONE GOING OFF BECAUSE OF A BIRTHDAY CAKE." IT WAS ONE BIRTHDAY MABEL, THE GUESTS, AND THE FIREFIGHTERS WILL NOT SOON FORGET.

Libel
I do believe that this passage is libelous. The main problem I have with the article is how it states that the professor "has touched her during tutoring sessions...". It is one thing to accuse an individual of sexual assault, but I believe that this statement took it too far.
The other issue I have with the passage is that it names both the student and the professor. Unless the student is willing to be identified, I believe that neither should be named. The professor should especially remain unidentified.
Lastly, I think that it is inappropriate to state that the professor would charge the newspaper would file a libel suit if it continued the story. I think that this passage would serverly harm the professor's image and it would be incredibly unfair to publish the article as is.
