For this assignment, I used an excerpt from top news #4 (beginning of the first paragraph, consisting of 94 words.):
"The article that I chose to analyze is all about the drought that Northern California has experienced. Although it has been raining for the past couple of weeks, and raining heavily at that, it is still not enough water to fill the reservoirs that supply us with federal water. Because of this, water will be rationed for the summer and it will bring heavy consequences to California's population. The article mentioned that farmer will be feeling the effects significantly because they will receive very little federal water and will have to provide their own."
-The average number of words per sentence is 23.5 (17, 32, 19, 26)
-The number of hard words is 12
-12 + 23.5 = 35.5
-35.5 X 0.4 = 14.2
I write at a FOG level of 14! I guess that makes me feel better about my writing after the last assignment where I found out I basically had no talent with writing in journalism! =)
I think my FOG level is high because I write long sentences and they can be run-on sentences sometimes. It can be a good or bad thing, depending on the situation.

A lower FOG level is better -- under 12 is best -- so try to shorten up some of your sentences. A good approach is to try to vary your sentence lengths. That has the added benefit of keeping your writing from developing a "monotone."
